Practice Fusion EHR Ordering system

UX AND PRODUCT MANAGEMENT

CHALLENGE

Patients need to focus on getting well, not worrying about paper prescriptions getting lost, delayed, filled incorrectly or violating their privacy. So in 2013, US law began requiring healthcare systems to shift away from paper prescriptions. This created urgent market demand for a secure, fully trackable Computerized Physician's Order Entry (CPOE) product. Practice Fusion seized this opportunity - with only nine months to meet federal requirements for Meaningful Use Stage II and IStop compliance.

ROLE

As senior UX designer, I was challenged to design a CPOE to better manage doctors' orders for prescriptions, laboratory tests and medical imaging. This essential upgrade to Practice Fusion's electronic health records (EHR) product needed to meet urgent patient needs, satisfy shifting regulatory requirements and generate revenue with a fee-per-transaction model.

Labs and imaging ordering workflow

Outcomes

  • Medical prescriptions, lab and imaging orders jumped with our CPOE release to 2.5 million prescriptions ordered per month and signup of 300+ medical labs and imaging providers nationwide
  • Product received high service approval ratings from physicians and helped make Practice Fusion the biggest EHR in the cloud, with more than 112,000 monthly active medical professionals and 91 million patients
  • Upgraded product paved the way for an $85 million funding round, was certified for Meaningful Use Stage 2 and met I-STOP requirements a year prior to the deadline
